Chapter Fourteen

Edna Evans turned quickly and the dog, still clamped on the seat of her camouflage jumpsuit, swung in an arc. “Get off me, you cur!”

“If you harm one hair on that dog, I will make you pay, Edna Evans,” I said. “Don’t think I won’t.”

“Ow! Call him off right now, Ivy. I think he may have broken skin.”

“Then I guess you won’t be super comfy in your recliner for awhile,” I said.

“This isn’t a game,” she said. “It’s a training exercise.”

Now Kellan and I flanked her and I finally signaled for Keats to let go.

“An exercise in what?” Kellan asked, putting his weapon away. “Trapping imaginary bears?”

I raised my hand and answered before Edna could. “Trapping imaginary zombies, Kellan. I’m guessing we’ve interrupted her survival class.”

Turning, he shouted, “If there are any more of you, show yourselves immediately. Says your chief of police.”

“You’re not my chief,” someone said. A middle-aged woman crawled out from behind a tree and pushed herself upright rather stiffly. It was one of the pair I saw at the fundraising meeting and again at Mandy’s Country Store. The other one joined her.

“Meet Beatie and Alfreda Agnew,” Edna said. “Sisters from Crow’s Landing.”

“You’re currently in my jurisdiction,” Kellan said. “Who else is around? Mrs. Rhodes?”

Gertie emerged from the shadows carrying Minnie. When she saw Kellan’s expression, she let the rifle drop to her side where the poncho enveloped it.

There was another rustle and out came my sister, Poppy, wearing a camo jumpsuit.

“Are you kidding me, Pops?” I said. “She almost killed Keats in a bear trap.”

“Your dog wasn’t supposed to barge in on my class,” Edna said.

“There’s at least one more of you,” Kellan called. “Come out or I’ll send in the hound. And he’s a butt-biter.”

I had a sinking feeling another family member might appear. Instead, the gray head that emerged belonged to Annamae Muir, one of the disbanded Bridge Buddies. Like the other members of the club, she had treated Edna badly in the court of public opinion. It got even worse when Fleecy, Annamae’s cat, chose Edna’s feral colony over a cushy home. Ultimately, Fleecy had moved in with Gertie Rhodes.

Annamae and Edna had traded bitter verbal slings, and yet here they were, setting bear traps together.

“Is that it?” Kellan asked, turning back to Edna.

“No,” Poppy said, scuffing the dirt with her boot.

As I’d feared, another Galloway soon appeared. My sister, Violet.

I would have deemed Violet the least likely to become a prepper and slayer of zombies. Growing up, she’d been nearly as quiet as I was, and I still didn’t know her very well. She had managed to remain pretty much a stranger to her own family and that took some doing. One day I’d tell her how much I admired that, but I wasn’t sure she’d appreciate my noticing.

“And now?” Kellan asked Edna.

She gave him a belligerent glare, followed by a reluctant nod.

“We’re the only ones who showed up for the course kickoff,” Poppy said. “A few people bailed when they realized Edna was serious about the overnight part.
